Why Protein is Important

Why Protein is so Important?

Protein is the single most important nutrient you need when working out and trying to build muscle. It helps to build and repair your muscles after you work out or lift weights. Without it your body would have a hard time recovering and would not make any sort of muscle gain. There are different types of protein out there but the most common one used by bodybuilders and strength athletes is whey protein. Whey protein is the fastest digesting protein and most would say the king of all protein powders. This is why it is ideal for drinking right after or before a workout to almost immediately replenish your muscles. Use it before your workout for energy and post workout for restoring your muscles and increasing protein synthesis. It is recommended that athletes consume at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. If your focus is gaining muscle mass or strength, you may want to up your intake to 1.5 grams per pound of body weight for optimal results. When you consume your protein generally has no major effect on the bigger picture. As long as you consume enough before you go to bed each night you should be in good shape. Most people typically like to have a high protein meal or shake after they workout to spike their insulin and further the body’s muscle building abilities.

Things to Consider When Buying Protein

1. More expensive does not always mean better quality.
2. Whey protein isolate is a better quality than whey protein concentrate.
3. Chocolate is usually the best flavor.
4. The more you buy, the better deal you get. Buy in bulk if you can.

Important Things You Should Know

Protein powder is called a “supplement” for a reason. It should be supplemental to your diet, the majority of protein in your diet should come from real food, not protein powder. Of course if you’re running low on money or don’t have time to cook 6 meals a day, protein powder really comes in handy. In order for you to see maximum results while taking protein powder your diet needs to be in check. You cannot rely on protein powder alone to build a great physique. You need real food like chicken breast, steak, tuna, salmon, turkey breast, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, and milk. Now if you’re eating those foods on the regular, protein powder will help take your body to the next level. If you’re having a hard time building muscle, you’ll be surprised to see the effect that an extra 50 grams of protein has on your ability to build muscle.
